The Pantone Institute has taken a different path for its 2022s Color of the yearwhich creates a brand new color to choose from instead of picking a pre-existing color.

For the first time in the 22-year history of the Pantone Color of the Year, the institute has created a completely new shade. The shade – PANTONE® 17-3938 Very Peri – belongs to the blue color family and has a purple-red undertone. The new shade is intended to “reflect what is going on in our global culture” and “express what people are looking for”.

Very Peri was created to display a “zippy, happy demeanor and dynamic presence that encourages bold creativity and imagination”.

According to TIME Magazine’s new hue is an ode to the future that speaks of the “increasing influence of the virtual world, with the advent of the metaverse, leisure trends like VR gaming and esports, and the growing popularity of cryptocurrency and NFTs”.

Pantone’s color experts look at different aspects to determine the color of the year. “This can include the entertainment industry and films in production, traveling art collections and new artists, fashion, all areas of design, popular travel destinations, as well as new lifestyles, play styles and socio-economic conditions.”

In 2020 the institute chose the neutral Ultimate Gray and the bold Yellow Illuminating tones as its colors of the year. They also launched a new shade of red that year to help tackle the stigma on menstruation.
