Many flower farms around Da Lat City are busily processing ornamental flower orders for the upcoming Tet holiday, which is only a few days away.

Currently, daisies cost VND 38,000 to 45,000 (US$1.7 to 2) per bundle of ten; gladioli for 50,000 VND ($2.2) a bundle of ten; carnation for 100,000 VND ($4.4) a bundle of twenty; lisianthus at VND140,000 ($6.2) per kilo; statice at VND85,000 ($3.8) per kilo; gerberas for VND100,000 ($4.4) a bundle of twenty; and lilies for VND180,000–220,000 ($8–9.7), a bundle of five.

In order to process orders on time, many farms in Lam Dong province have to work through the night. As the area of flower farms decreases this year but market demand does not, the price has been forecast to rise, which is pretty good news for farmers.

To make it easier for sellers and buyers, shipping companies updated their fixed transportation rates very early, ranging from VND350,000 to VND500,000 (US$15.5 to US$22) per package.

A similarly fortunate situation can be observed in the Mekong Delta. Various new exotic, long-lived, colorful flowers including red, yellow or orange jungle geranium and river bush willow will be introduced at Sa Dec Flower Village (in Sa Dec city, Dong Thap Province) this year.

According to farmer Huynh Minh Tuan in Tan Quy Dong district of Sa Dec city, a pair of Jungle Geranium Pots usually costs VND 350,000 ($15.5). Certain large pots even sell for VND 1 million ($44). He said 80 percent of his flowers are packaged for wholesale.

Near Tuan’s farm is Nguyen Van Ut’s flower farm, which specializes in hydrangeas. Usually grown in cold areas, this flower is now adapted to a more tropical climate and is always on the favorite list of young people in the southern region. This year he has already sold 10,000 pots priced at VND 45,000-130,000 ($2-5.7) each.

Also due to a reduction in the area of planting, flower crops can hardly meet the demands of the market this year, which leads to rather high prices.

Another famous flower village in the Mekong Delta is in Cho Lach district of Ben Tre province. Most farmers said they had already sold 70 percent of their produce to wholesalers. Farmers in this district specialize in shaped ornamental plants and can sell a pair of tiger-shaped plants for VND 5-6 million (US$220-265).

Moving to the capital of Ochna integerrima (Yellow May Flower) in central Vietnam – the village of Nhon An in Binh Dinh Province – it is easy to see the busy activities of wholesalers in the local markets. Reports show that each household in this village can earn over 266 million VND ($11,745) on this Tet holiday. The price of each flower pot here ranges from 500,000 to 2.5 million VND (22 to 110 US dollars) thanks to the particularly favorable weather conditions this year.

Unfortunately, the situation in certain places in Vietnam is not so rosy. The flower market in Da Nang City is quite quiet, few people come to buy small ornamental flowers or ornamental tangerine trees. Even with sales going from VND1.5 million (US$66) in previous years to just a few hundred thousand VND this year, not many customers seem interested.

Similarly, in Thua Thien – Hue Province, farmers only grow common flowers of low value such as daisies or gerberas. However, it is now the 23rdapprox of the 12thth Lunar month already, but not many wholesalers order yet. Local authorities are trying their best to engage with wholesalers and retailers across the region to help farmers and are promoting measures such as exemption or reduction of storage fees.
