Fourteen UT student athletes became Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars in 2020

Austin, Texas – A total of 14 University of Texas student-athletes have been named Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars for the 2019-20 season. The awards honor colored students who embody the highest standards of erudition, athleticism and humanity.

UT’s 14 award winners include: Joanne Allen-Taylor (Women’s basketball), Claudine Blancaflor (Athletics women), Diana Cañas (rowing), Logan Eggleston (Volleyball), Kamaka Hepa (Men’s basketball), Roshon Johnson (Soccer), Moro Ojomo (Soccer), Paola Pineda (Women swimming & diving), Beth Ramos (Women’s athletics), Ishan Rison (Soccer), Samantha Schulhan (Women’s athletics), Tecora Turner (Soccer), Jaylene Vu (Women’s athletics) and Kelly Xac (Women’s golf).

To be nominated, minority students must compete in an inter-university sport, achieve a cumulative grade point average of at least 3.2, and be active on their campus or in their communities. Inspired by tennis legend Arthur Ashe Jr.’s commitment to education and his love of tennis, the award marks the 28th anniversary of the award, which began in 1992.

In addition to their athletic skills and academic achievements, Arthur Ashe Jr. Sports Scholars demonstrate a commitment to community service and student leadership. Diverse: questions of higher education Every year the magazine dedicates an issue to honoring student athletes for their commitment to top performance. The NCAA Office of Inclusion has a partnership with Diverse to support this outstanding class of academic athletes.
