I’m someone who likes to plan my seasonal wardrobe and accessories in advance, including the nail polish I’ll be wearing in those few months. Nail color can definitely add flair to an outfit, especially around the holidays, that’s why Essie’s new winter collection I noticed. Inspired by children’s toys, it features vibrant and playful colors, including both traditional and funky winter colors.

After Essie sent me the collection, I put it to the test to see if the colors looked as good painted on as they did in the bottle, and – spoiler alert – even better. Not only have I found what I consider the holy grail of Christmas red, but these six shades have earned a permanent place in my collection thanks to their versatility.

I know the claim that a nail polish is the “perfect” Christmas red is a big statement, but I think Essie’s Toy to the World lives up to that title. It’s bright and bold because it’s a coral-based red; I find a lot of red lacquers that belong to festive collections a little too dark and in the end go unnoticed. (I got several compliments during the time I wore Toy to the World, which is always a plus.) Most importantly, it goes well beyond the holiday season. I can wear this shade all winter and beyond without any problems and I don’t have the feeling that I still have my “Christmas nails” on.

Let’s face it, there are a lot of sticky and not-so-flattering metallic nail polishes out there, and I’ve never found a shade that I really loved enough to repeat over the holidays. But that’s no longer the case thanks to Essie’s Jingle Belle, a very glamorous shimmering silver that you’ll want to wear for weeks after New Years Eve. My favorite part about it is that it has an opaque finish that is hard to find on glitter polishes. It looks super pretty too, paired with Toy to the World.

If pink instead of red is your thing for the holidays, All Dolled Up is a really fun shade that is just the thing for you. It took me by surprise because it’s a bright, hot pink that I wouldn’t normally call a winter tone, but after wearing it for two weeks I’m totally reformed. It’s so flattering too, and I couldn’t stop looking at my nails all the time.

Forest green is one of my favorite colors and I am so in love with Lucite of Reality. It’s a deep, creamy green with a hint of petrol so it doesn’t look too dark when it’s turned on. (It definitely looks lighter in person than in photos.) I can totally see myself wearing this shade a lot in winter and fall.

I’ve never met a nail color that embodies champagne more than Glee-for-All. It’s a lovely pink-gold hue that’s full of shine. It’s a pretty light color so it’s difficult to capture its magical effects on the camera, but I was really overjoyed when I put it on. It’s subtle enough to wear on a daily basis, and I’ll likely reach for it whenever I feel like I need a break from bolder colors.

Sometimes we need a touch of summer in winter – a reminder that the weather is getting warmer again – and that’s what Don’t Kid Yourself does for me. The light peach shade is exactly what I would reach for in mid-July, but I like the thought of using it in mid-January when I need a little pick-me-up too.
